Einbürgerungstest: cost, booking, results
The test itself is doable. What many people underestimate is the logistics around it. Here is what the test costs, how to get a seat and when your result arrives.
Short version: €25 per attempt, book early, and expect to wait a few weeks to around three months for your result.
Cost: €25 per attempt
The Einbürgerungstest costs €25 per attempt, the same throughout Germany. You can retake it as many times as you like, because the regulation puts no limit on how often you take part, and there is no required waiting period between attempts. Every attempt needs its own registration and the fee again.
Booking: book early
You usually take the test at a Volkshochschule (adult education centre). Test dates are usually held monthly, but they are often fully booked. In larger cities you may wait 2-3 months for a place, and in some areas up to a year.
So book as soon as you have a rough idea of when your test will be, not only when you feel fully prepared. The wait for your test date gives you time to study.
Results: weeks to three months
Your answer sheet is not graded on site. BAMF grades all tests centrally. The result usually arrives after several weeks, and depending on the backlog it can take about three months.
What 17 out of 33 means
In the test you answer 33 questions in 60 minutes. For citizenship, 17 answers must be correct, just over half. That sounds easy, and statistically it is. Still, it is worth aiming well above the pass mark: a failed attempt costs €25, a new appointment and another wait for the result, realistically 3 to 6 months.
You do not only need the certificate for citizenship. It is also valid for the Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent residence permit) and, as things currently stand, does not expire.
